Whenever you attempt to speak an utterance or a recitation, you must make a Truespeak roll to correctly pronounce and arrange the exacting syllables and convoluted grammar of Truespeech. The DC of this roll depends on the type of target to be affected and whether you know the target's truename.
Target | Truespeak DC |
---|---|
Creature, known truename* | 10 + creature's HD |
Creature, unknown truename | 10 + creature's HD + creature's base Will save + creature's base Fortitude save |
Mundane object | 15 |
Magic object, known truename | 15 |
Magic object, unknown truename | 15 + caster level |
Mundane location, known truename | 10 + (Radius of the area in feet / 5)† |
Mundane location, unknown truename | 10 + Radius of the area in feet† |
Magic location, known truename | 10 + (Radius of the area in feet / 5)† |
Magic location, unknown truename | 10 + Radius of the area in feet + caster level† |
*Used for recitations. | |
†A location to be targeted must fit within the radius of the utterance that targets it. The radius of an utterance can be adjusted to any interval of 5 feet, up to the maximum given in the utterance's listing. |
Certain penalties may apply to Truespeak checks, depending on the circumstances. See the table below for examples of what may increase your Truespeak DCs.
Circumstance | Truespeak DC |
---|---|
You cannot hear yourself, either from deafness or extremely loud surroundings | +5 |
Uttering defensively | +5 |
Ignore target's spell resistance | +5 |
