Evocation

Evocation is the art of pulling energy across planar boundaries with the soul. Powerful evokers can summon walls of fire, hurl blasts of lightning, send out mighty shockwaves, freeze or heat objects, generate lights and sounds, and snuff out flames. While much of the finer art of evocation is little understood, even by its most ardent practitioners, it is without a doubt the most immediately respected form of soul magic - whether due to admiration or fear.

All usage of Evocation is limited to a range in meters equal to double your Soulpower.

Utility

Evocation has moderate utility out of combat. It can be used without drain to slowly heat or cool objects, light candles, power simple electrical circuits, create dim lights, or generate simple humming noises. For some drain, it can be used to generate showers of sparks, change the temperature of a room, or crudely mimic speech or music.

Homeostasis

By regulating the energy flow of your own body or the bodies of others, you can resist severe temperatures. You may eliminate the negative effects of harsh temperature with a Soulpower/Evocation roll of (2 + number of targets). This causes 1 Drain per target every 6 hours.

This ability can be used to resist damage caused purely by heat, cold, or electricity. While this ability is maintained, you may choose to reduce any such damage by an amount up to your Evocation. You suffer Drain equal to the damage prevented.

Combat

Evocation is the best form of soul magic for area denial - it can make devastating attacks against large groups, so long as the caster is willing to suffer the drain for it.

Blast

Elemental Attack

Summon a burst of energy in an area. Select up to two connected spaces that are both within range. Make a single attack roll with Soulpower/Soul Casting to attack all targets in the area. Roll for damage against targets hit with Soulpower/Evocation difficulty 5. This attack causes 1 Drain.

You may apply the following modifications to the blast, so long as the amount of drain you inflict on yourself is not higher than your Evocation rank. You may apply modifications multiple times.

  • Lightning
    • Apply more electricity to the attack to lower the difficulty of the damage roll by 1. Causes 1 Drain.
  • Fire
    • Apply more fire to the attack to hit 3 more connected spaces. Causes 1 Drain.
  • Shockwave
    • Apply a warping shockwave to the attack to deal 1 point of damage to all targets in the area, even if they were not hit by the attack roll. Causes 2 Drain.
  • Sustained
    • Maintain the attack until your next turn, attacking all targets who walk through the area or end their turn in the area. Causes 1 Drain. Cannot be applied multiple times.

Damage a target by directly heating, freezing, electrifying, or jolting it. Make an attack roll with Soulpower/Soul Casting difficulty 5. The target may defend with a Soulpower/Resolve roll. On a hit, make a damage roll with Soulpower/Evocation. This attack causes 2 Drain.

This attack can target items held or worn by an opponent. Against a primarily metal item, the attack damages the wielder, lowering the difficulty of the damage roll by 1 but allowing the opponent to drop the item to avoid taking damage. Against a non-metal item, the item itself is directly damaged.
